Nanny's Camera Reveals 1950's Chicago

Vivian Maier was a nanny in Chicago, but she loved to take photos…and she was damn good at it too. She recently passed away, but rolls and rolls of undeveloped film were discovered in an auction and now her name is on its way to stardom. She captured incredible shots of everyday life in Chicago. The thing that gets me most about this story, aside from the artistry of her photos, is that she took the photos because she wanted to; perhaps it’s appropriate to say that she had to in order to feed some need, although we’ll never know for sure. She’s an inspiration to me in the purest sense. Each of her photographs is an example of how to do what you love to the best of your ability. It’s just a shame that her talent was never recognized in her lifetime. Click the title to look at some of her insightful images.

Word for the Day: Autodidact

jkat:

Autodidact: noun. A self-taught person.

Today I figured out that I am an autodidact. I had the help of another autodidact in deducing this. Many years ago, I was rummaging around in a garage sale and came across two unusual framed black and white prints. They were distorted images of nude women…

Jane Birkin at the Portage Park Theater
Jane Birkin was one sexy, confident lady back in the day and she has definitely maintained a joie de vivre that is admirable. If you aren’t familiar with her, here’s her bio and some photos of her career that will give you a good idea of what she’s all about. She put this show together of songs by Serge Gainsbourg and performed it in Japan for the victims of the tsunami. She then brought it, along with the Japanese musicians, to the States. They are touring to remind people of the tragedy and to help raise funds for the children of Japan.

This is where I go in my head when I need to relax.

When she finally arrived, she found the windmill to be a disgrace to all other windmills…for when there was no wind, it did not have a second job on which to fall back.

Anywhere but home, James.
For some reason, this picture reminds me of a drawing my grandma did. It was in a journal of hers that she wrote during the 1920’s when she ran away from home. The drawing was of a flapper-looking lady, complete with fishnet stockings, long necklaces and headband, who had clearly been drinking and she was saying, “Anywhere but home, James.” It just seems to me like that flapper-drawing lady would live here.
